 Abstract:  This collection houses 180 broadside editions of the Levity Lode, a cartoon dealing with mining and occupational safety issues, that John Powers drew for The Mining Journal. These cartoons were later reprinted in broadside form and distributed to mining companies for display on their employee bulletin boards in one of the first consistent efforts to raise the safety consciousness of miners in the West.
